VietNamNet Bridge – Project “Onebook” of Sachhay.com was kicked off last August at Z-30D prison in the southern province of Binh Thuan. Accordingly, a library for prisoners was opened.

The project then went to Xuan Nguyen prison in Hai Phong and Phuoc Hoa in Tien Giang province.

The Director of Tre Publishing House and a member of Sachhay.com, Quach Thu Nguyet, talked about the project.

Why is Sachhay.com targeting prisoners in the Onebook project?

Prisoners are those who have temporarily lost their freedom. Bringing books to prisoners is to improve their spiritual life. It is a way to help them mend their ways to return to normal life.

Our project has been implemented well at three detention centres, Z-30D, Xuan Nguyen and Phuoc Hoa. However, I think the media should join this project to draw public attention to presenting books to prisoners.

Where do the books for Onebook project come from?

We call for funds from social organisations, companies, benefactors and artists to buy books for prisoners. Most of the money comes from enterprises. The 3,000 books for Z-30D detention centre worth VND100 million ($5,890) were contributed by fashion designer Si Hoang and some businessmen.

Each prison has received at least 3,000 books, valued around VND100 million (including bookshelves). Some companies have contributed money and some donated books.

What kinds of books are Onebook presenting to detention centres?

We choose from several kinds of books, including: books about lifestyles, vocational teaching books, literature and health books.

We mainly offer prisoners new book titles. We have asked prisons to call for prisoners’ families to donate books to detention centre libraries. I’m very happy to see prisoners and proctors’ enthusiasm about the libraries.

Onebook project is the initiative of Sachhay.com, a non-profit organisation established last March by PACE to encourage reading and help readers choose good books.

The founders of Sachhay.com include many famous people, such as Dr. Nguyen Quang A (Director of the IDS Research and Development Institute), Pham Sanh Chau (Chief of the UNESCO Department – Ministry of Foreign Affairs), Dr. Le Dang Doanh, Prof. Dr. Chu Hao, writer Nguyen Ngoc, Dr. Quach Thu Nguyet, translator Trinh Lu, critic Vuong Tri Nhan, historian Duong Trung Quoc, poet Vu Quan Phuong, poet Do Trung Quan, educational expert Gian Tu Trung, film director Viet Linh, and Honourable Artist Thanh Loc.
