The Chanh Dong Gate (main gate to the East) in the former royal capital of Hue will be restored to its original form.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held by the Buff’s Monument Conservation Centre last Friday to kick off the construction.

Chanh Dong Gate, also known as Dong Ba Gate, is one of the original 10 gates of the royal capital. It was built under the reign of Emperor Minh Mang (1820-40).

With a vaulted arch that spans a wall, the gate once had two watchtowers that were later destroyed in 1968 during the American War.

With a total investment of VND3.52 billion, the project is entrusted to the central region’s Institute of Science and Technology and is set for completion in 2010.
