VietNamNet Bridge – Researcher Tran Dinh Son has released a book about patterns on porcelains under the Nguyen Dynasty. With lively photos and careful explanations, the book explores the beauty of Vietnamese arts in a long period.

Researcher Tran Dinh Son and his two research books.

In 2007, when Tran Dinh Son published a photo book entitled “Nhung Net Dan Thanh” (Exquisite Brushstrokes), introducing 238 photos about patterns on porcelain tea plates belonging to Vietnamese in the 18th-19th centuries, he was praised by local scholars for his efforts to bring the beauty of the ancient arts of Vietnam to current art lovers.

The second book, “Thuong ngoan do su ky kieu thoi Nguyen 1802-1945” (Appreciating the Custom-made Pattern Porcelains During the Nguyen Dynasty 1802-1945), was published on February 21, 2009 by the Literature and Art Publishing House. The book is both in Vietnamese and English.

The book is a unique collection of photos and easy-to-understanding captions and explanations about the meaning of porcelain items of the Nguyen kings and mandarins.

According to the author, “do su ky kieu” means “Hue city’s deep blue enameled porcelains.” This term is sourced from the French words “bleus de Hue” of a French scholar who had a passion for porcelain of the Nguyen dynasty.

Though Hue’s porcelain under the Nguyen Dynasty was mainly imported, according to Son, they are not Chinese or French products. They were produced abroad, using designs by Vietnamese people. Most of them have patterns which are Han Nom scripts.

“I would like to thank Mr. Tran Dinh Son. He did a very meaningful job in maintaining and preserving the cultural beauty of Vietnam. This book is not only for antique collectors but everyone who love and want to learn about the country’s history,” said Professor Tran Van Khe at the releasing ceremony of this book.
