In 2007, when Tran Dinh Son published a photo book entitled “Nhung net dan thanh” (Exquisite Brushstrokes), introducing 238 photos about patterns on ceramic Vietnamese tea plates in the 18^th-19^th centuries, he was praised by local scholars for his efforts to bring the beauty of ancient arts of Vietnam to current art lovers.

The second book, “Thuong ngoan do su ky kieu thoi Nguyen 1802-1945” (Appreciating custom-made patterns on ceramic pottery during the Nguyen Dynasty 1802-1945), was published on February 21, 2009 by the Literature and Art Publishing House. The book is in both Vietnamese and English.

The book is a unique collection of photos with easy-to-understanding captions and explanations about the meanings of the patterns on porcelain items from the time of the Nguyen kings and mandarins.

According to the author, “do su ky kieu” means “Hue city’s deep-blue enamel porcelain”. This term is sourced from the French words “bleus de Hue” coined by a French scholar who had a passion for Nguyen dynasty ceramic pottery.

Though Hue’s ceramic items from the Nguyen Dynasty were mainly imported, according to Son, they are not Chinese or French products. They were produced abroad, using Vietnamese designs. Most of them have patterns which are in Han Nom script.

“I would like to thank Mr. Tran Dinh Son. He has done a very meaningful thing in maintaining and preserving the cultural beauty of Vietnam. This book is not only for antique collectors but everyone who loves and wants to learn about the country’s history,” said Prof. Tran Van Khe at the ceremony for the release of the book.
