There will be free admission for all later this month when the Institute of Cultural Exchange with France (Idecaf) in Ho Chi Minh City screens the award-winning Vietnamese feature film “Moon at the bottom of the well.”

Trang noi day gieng, the film’s original Vietnamese name, won its female star Hong Anh the Murh Award for Best Actress in the Asia/Africa category at the 2008 Dubai International Film Festival.

Back home on March 1, it picked up a Silver Kite for Best Picture at the Canh dieu vang (Golden Kite) national film awards.

The screenings on March 17 and 18 starting at 7:30 p.m. are part of a month of Vietnamese and French-language films organized by the French consulate in HCMC.

Whether there will be English subtitles or not has yet to be announced.

Free tickets are available from Idecaf at 31 Thai Van Lung Street, District 1.

Set in the old capital of Hue city, “Moon at the bottom of the well” began screening in the central town last Friday as a test case to guage the reaction of Vietnamese audiences.

A press conference to publicize the film will be held today at the Cinebox cinema in HCMC’s District 3.

In the US, the Institute of Vietnamese Culture and Education in New York has invited director Nguyen Vinh Son to introduce “Moon at the bottom of the well” to students at Cornell, Yale, Harvard and Princeton universities at the end of this month, the director said.

Son will discuss his picture with the audience after each screening.
