Born into a rich family in Quynh Luu District, Nghe An Province on November 22, 1919, Bui Hien became known as master of short stories in Vietnam.

Born into a rich family in Quynh Luu District, Nghe An Province on November 22, 1919, Bui Hien became known as master of short stories in Vietnam.

Being a patriot, Bui Hien took part in revolutionary movements when he was young and held such positions as chairman of Nghe An National Salvation Cultural Association and chief of Nghe An Information and Propaganda Service.

After 1954, Bui Hien settled down in Hanoi and worked for the Vietnam Writers’ Association and was appointed chairman of the Prose Assessment Council for many years.

His works include: Lying as a Protest (published before 1945), Glint (1961), In Wind and Sand (1965), Wide Road (1966), Flowers and Steel (1972), and A Life (1976)

Bui Hien also translated a number of works by famous foreign writers into Vietnamese, such as The French Testament by A. Makins and The Civilized by Claude Farrère.

Bui Hien was awarded the government’s Literature and Arts Prize in 2001.
