Da Nang’s Ngu Hanh Son (Marble Mountains – Five elements mountains) will host the only fine-art stone museum in Vietnam, the Ngu Hanh legend park, a fine-art stone village and a pilgrimage village.

According to the Director of the HCM City Architecture University, Dr. Pham Tu, Vietnam has Tam Dao mountain in the north, That Son Mountain in the south, and Ngu Hanh Son in the central region as special landscapes.

Ngu Hanh Son has Am Duong (Yin and Yang) – Ngu Hanh (five basic elements: metal, wood, water, fire, earth) so it is not only a landscape of Da Nang city and the central region but also a significantly supernatural site of Vietnam.

Based on that idea, HCM City Architecture University’s experts introduced an architecture plan for Ngu Hanh Son.

Accordingly, there will be a 139ha area for the Non Nuoc stone craft village and the Ngu Hanh Son tourist site. The total investment in this project is estimated at VND2 trillion ($117.6 million). When the project is finished, this site can welcome 3,000 visitors per day.

Residents living in the Ngu Hanh Son area will be grouped up in three stone craft villages which are scheduled to have over 6,200 people or nearly 1,600 families. Each family will have 191sq.m of land.

The village will have 1,500 stone shops and tourist service centres. In the heart of the three villages will be an administrative zone, a statue garden, a temple worshipping the founder of the stone carving village and other works.

The area around the five mountains of Kim Son (Metal Mountain), Moc Son (Wood Mountain), Thuy Son (Water Mountain), Hoa Son (Fire Mountain) and Tho Son (Earth Mountain) will be enlarged.

Thuy Son Mountain will be connected with the Co Co River by a system of canals to become a “water cultural” site.

Tho Son Mountain will host a statue garden and a stone museum. Kim Son Mountain will host the Goddess of Mercy Festival and Hoa Son will be the home for rare plants.

The only fine-art stone museum in Vietnam will be built on 7.3ha of land to exhibit and sell stone-made artworks and to hold stone-made artwork-related events. The museum will be built underground.

Robert Winer, the representative of the critic consulting group (Winter Group), said that the HCM City Architecture University’s design is very good.

Da Nang’s Chairman Nguyen Ba Thanh asked for a halt of all construction activities in this area as of February 26.

Marble Mountains is a cluster of five marble and limestone hills located in Ngu Hanh Son ward, south of Da Nang city. The five mountains are named after the five elements; Kim (metal), Thuy (water), Moc (wood), Hoa (fire) and Tho (earth).

All of the mountains have cave entrances and numerous tunnels, and it is possible to climb to the summit of one of the peaks. Several Buddhist sanctuaries can also be found within the mountains, making this a famous tourist destination.

The area is famous for stone sculpture making and stone-cutting crafts. Direct rock extraction from the mountains was banned recently. Materials are now being transported from quarries in Quang Nam province.
