Members of the NEWS physical theater troupe rehearse for Sunday’s performance of “Another Midsummer Night’s Dream”

The Ho Chi Minh City Stage and Cinematography College will stage a Vietnamese play inspired by William Shakespeare’s “Another Midsummer Night’s Dream” on Sunday evening.

“Another Midsummer Night’s Dream” mixes contemporary physical theater (a crossover of dance and drama) with elements of folksong and hat boi, a Vietnamese classical drama also known as tuong.

The comic play full of love, magic and mistakes is part of “The Journey through Cultural Identities” project initiated by Norwegian theater director Cliff Moustache and Nguyen Nghieu Khai Thu, an expatriate scholar of Vietnamese theater.

Actors from the HCMC Hat Boi Theater and students from the Stage and Cinematography College, all members of the NEWS physical theater troupe, will make up the cast.

Thu and Moustache’s first production, a play called Hanh trinh va dich den (Journeys and destinations), likewise combines the traditional and the modern.

It was staged last June at the HCMC Institute for Cultural Exchange with France, better known as Idecaf.

Admission to “Another Midsummer Night’s Dream” at 125 Cong Quynh Street in District 1 is free.
