A small room on the second floor of a school in Hai Ba Trung district, Hanoi is brightened every night. With two old mirrors and a music player, over 10 school girls passionately practice hip-hop dances.

The room opens from 6-9, six days a week for Bgirl (female breakdancers), a group of high-school students in Hanoi. The instructors are senior dancers of the Big Toe group, which is famous for breakdancing in Vietnam.

The youngest trainee in this class is Do Thu Thao, a 10th-grade student from Dong Da High School. Thao joins the class thanks to her mother, who expects that her little daughter will be healthier by practicing breakdancing.

At the beginning, Thao didn’t like breakdancing very much but the little girl quickly came to love this sportive art. After three months, she was recruited to Big Toe as the smallest member.

“Thanks to breakdancing, I can run five rounds around my school’s yard. In the past I could run one round only,” Thao said.

All members in this class spend their free time breakdancing. They have committed to their families to ensure achieving good study results to be permitted to practice.

“It is quite hard to breakdance but thanks to our passion we can arrange our time for it,” said Huyen, a student at Hanoi Open University.

Diep Anh, 20, the key member of Big Toe came to breakdancing by chance, and now she is a breakdancer and a breakdance instructor.

In June 2005, Cun Cun, a breakdance troupe with five girls was set up. The troupe won Halo prize for breakdance for three consecutive years. In mid 2007, Cun Cun started to perform on stage.
