A visitor examines pottery at the “Lai Thieu and Southern Household Pottery” exhibition, which opened at the Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts Museum Tuesday

An exhibition of Lai Thieu pottery, a style brought to Vietnam hundreds of years ago by immigrants from China, opened at the Ho Chi Minh City Fine Arts Museum Tuesday.

The Lai Thieu and Southern Household Pottery exhibition features pieces made by peoples with origins in what are now the provinces of Guangdong and Fujian in China. The works, some of which date back to the 1890s, include decorative glazed statues, vases, small jars, cups, bowls, plates and pots in a wide variety of colors and models.

Lai Thieu Village in the southern province of Binh Duong, neighboring Ho Chi Minh City, is home to a large number of Chinese-Vietnamese people, also known as Hoa.

Households in southern Vietnam have been using pottery products from Lai Thieu for over two centuries, said museum director Nguyen Thi Duc at the ceremony.

The event is the museum’s largest-ever exhibition of Lai Thieu pottery, said art historian Huynh Ngoc Trang at the opening ceremony.

Some 215 of the 640 pieces on display were collected by the museum while 424 are owned by private collectors, such as Trang, Ly Than and Nguyen Anh Kiet.

The exhibition will remain open to the public at 97A Pho Duc Chinh Street in District 1 until May 25.
