More than 200,000 children in Ho Chi Minh City took part in an art competition held by the city’s education and cultural departments on Sunday.

Concurring at 10 locations, the competition consisted of two parts: drawing or painting on paper, and computer art.

There were also special categories for groups, visually impaired children, ceramic vase decoration, and others.

It was the twelfth running of the contest for school children, orphans and disabled children aged between four and 15 years.

The purpose of the annual event is to nurture children’s imagination and encourage them to express their thoughts and feelings about the world around them.

Sunday’s contest was just one component of Green Drawing 2009, a major event organized by the HCMC Department of Education and the HCMC Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism.

The awards ceremony for the many winners on the weekend will be held on May 31 at Phan Dinh Phung Sports Complex in District 3.
