A photo exhibition kicked off Tuesday at the Institute of Cultural Exchange with France (Idecaf) in Ho Chi Minh City to raise funds for needy high school graduates taking this year’s university entrance exams.

The “VNPhoto – Student Support 2009” exhibit features 202 photos by members of VNPhoto.net, an online community for photography enthusiasts.

Selected from 650 entries by professional and amateur shutterbugs, the images are diverse in themes and techniques, depicting the beauty of Vietnamese people, lifestyles and landscapes.

Following the event, which runs until Sunday at 31 Thai Van Lung Street, District 1, the photos will be auctioned off and are expected to raise around VND100 million (US$5,626).

The proceeds will be donated to local poor students and those who have to travel from remote areas to HCMC for the exams in July.

The exhibition and silent auction is co-organized by VNPhoto.net, the Student Assistance Center under the municipal Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union and Canon Singapore.

Each year, student organizations offer services and programs to ease the process of the exam period including cheap transportation and accommodation.

The event also marks the fourth anniversary of VNPhoto.net, which was founded in 2005.

Online at www.vnphoto.net, the group has attracted over 30,000 members of all ages and professions who share their work, techniques and experiences.
