Inspired by the hard lives of women living in northern Vietnam, Danish photographer Catherine Dolleris’s Anh mat nguoi phu nu (Women’s Eyes) shows a deep respect and admiration for these women.

“Vietnam has a diversified culture and this cultural diversity should be protected, not for the tourism industry, but for its own history, characteristics and power,” says Dolleris.

“Women should be empowered and equality must be guaranteed to make sure women could have an equal opportunity in education, jobs and health care.”

Dolleris’ collection reflected the modern hardships of Vietnamese women living in rural areas, especially those from minority ethnic communities such as the Mong, Red Dao and Lo Lo in northern provinces.

The artist had worked in South Africa, India and Nepal before coming to Vietnam.

She works for the Danish Embassy in Hanoi and CARE, an international humanitarian organization in Vietnam. The exhibit will be open until April 28 at 16, Ngo Quyen Street, Hanoi.
