Ten pupils were awarded prizes yesterday at the Hoang Hoa Tham Primary School, Ha Noi, from the domestic competition held by the children’s newspaper Nhi Dong and the European Commission to Viet Nam.

For the third year in a row, the European Commission held an international drawing competition on gender equality to celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8. This competition received about 3,000 entries from across the nation.

The winners expressed creativity, enthusiasm and an understanding of gender equality in the spirit of children, said Willy Vandenberghe, from the European Commission.

This is the second time Vietnamese children from ages 8 to 10 have participated in the competition. Last year, Nguyen Ngoc Yen Nhu from the southern province of Long An and a girl from Thailand became the first winners from Asia.

A jury will be composed of children from the 27 EU member states and the exhibition will be inaugurated in autumn 2009 to celebrate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

The award ceremony yesterday was part of European Days 2009 in Viet Nam.
