The People’s Committee of Duy Xuyen District in the central region’s Quang Nam Province announced Thursday that it would build a statue of late Polish architect Kazimiers Kwiatkowski (1944-1997) to honor him.

Construction will begin next month and the statue is expected to be inaugurated on December 4, 10 years after the district’s My Son Sanctuary was certified as a world cultural heritage site, the committee said.

Known also as “Architect Kazik” by his Vietnamese friends and colleagues, Kwiatkowski had a longstanding relationship with Vietnam for nearly two decades and called it his “second country.”

Together with other Polish experts and Vietnamese officials, Kwiatkowski researched many of Vietnam’s Cham historic relics following the war.

Kwiatkowski is also credited with helping turn Quang Nam’s My Son Sanctuary and Hoi An Ancient Town into world cultural heritage sites.
