Born in Nam Dan District of central Nghe An Province, the 91-year-old artist is considered one of the leading Vietnamese painters of his time, along with Nguyen Sang, Duong Bich Lien and Bui Xuan Phai.

After graduating from the Indochina College of Fine Arts in 1946, the painter lectured at the Art College at the revolutionary base of Viet Bac during the fight against French colonialists, and at the Ha Noi Fine Arts College between 1959-1960.

After paying his respects to the artist, the President said that the Party, State and the people had always appreciated Nghiem’s devotion to the arts. He also wished the elderly painter good health and expressed his hope that the painter would continue to contribute to the country’s arts scene.

On thy occasion, the State leader asked the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Viet Nam Arts Association to propose preferential treatment to artists who had rendered exceptional services to their country.
