Ly Nha Ky on a charity trip to visit children who suffer from facial deformities.

The actress Ly Nha Ky will be the new Smile Ambassador for the NGO Operation Smile come July, Operation Smile announced recently.

Besides her main mission to call for people to donate to the fund to treat children’s facial deformities, Ms Ky will also participate in all charity activities with children, including playing games, and appearing and encouraging them before the operation.

Answering the online newspaper Ngoisao.net about her new role, Ms Ky said: “I still remember the small village in Vung Tau where I lived during my childhood. There was a boy that I never forget. He never joined our games, smiled or talked to us, not once. At my early age, I could not understand why he always stood apart from us. But now, I understand that he felt a complex about his lip malformation. And I know, maybe until now he is yet to find his smile.”

“To me, the moment I answered yes to the proposal by Operation Smile brings me a sense of freedom. I feel like my burden about the boy in my childhood is somewhat released. I will try my best to make the dreams of those who suffer with facial deformities come true,” Ky added.

Running in Vietnam since 1989, the U.S based organization has carried out surgery on 13,000 Vietnamese children who suffered from facial deformities.

Ly Nha Ky was born in 1982 in Vung Tau and moved to Germany when she was 16 years old. After returning to Vietnam in 2006, she started her acting career with her first lead role in the HCMC TV’s series “Kieu nu va dai gia” (Beloved women and rich men).

Besides appearing in some local films, she will also appear in the Hollywood film “Shanghai,” set to be released in 2010, and has her own media company and a real estate business.
