Twelve wannabe stars crooned their favourite melodies about the country, family, school, teachers and friends last night as the first round of the finals in HCM City Television (HTV)’s annual singing contest got under way.

The Tieng Ca Hoc Duong (School Singing) contest aims to provide healthy entertainment for young people in the summer, and an occasion for young people across the country to meet and showcase their talents.

Elimination of candidates will begin at the end of the second round until the final four – two males and two females – are chosen in fifth round.

The five rounds are being held at the HCM City Television Theatre and Lan Anh Club until July 3 while the finals and the awards ceremony will be held at the Lan Anh Club. All concerts will be broadcast live on HTV9.

The Tieng Ca Hoc Duong contest was initiated by HTV in 2006. This year’s contest saw nearly 1,500 young people from across the country take part in the preliminary selection rounds in HCM City and Ha Noi from June 4 to 7.
