VietNamNet Bridge – As of July 3, Hanoi will have a drama stage reminiscent of HCM City-based Idecaf stage, a very popular address of HCM City audiences. The manager of the new stage, meritorious artist Chi Trung, hopes that the theatre will be lit up every evening to serve Hanoians.

Drama stages in HCM City have shows everyday. Why is it that theatres in Hanoi do not do this? Is it because artists in Hanoi are not as good as their colleagues in HCM City or Hanoian stages lack a suitable policy?

I was very sad seeing drama stages in HCM City like Idecaf, Phu Nhuan and 5B always selling out tickets for all kinds of shows, from dramas for kids to comedies and serious dramas.

However, we should understand the rules of development, the rules of demand and supply. People want to say that artists in the north don’t know how to sell their products and northern audiences neglect plays. But they are all wrong. The audience is the essential thing.

Don’t you think that HCM City’s artists are better than their northern colleagues in being abreast of the times?

I don’t deny the talent of my colleagues in HCM City but I would like to affirm that success only comes when the audience has a demand for and supports artists.

Anyway, I admit that northern artists have contributed to diminishing that little demand. The number of audiences is small while artists do nothing to stimulate them. That’s my fault and the fault of northern artists. The key is we have to make a fire to stimulate demand.

I decided to make a move and to create a new source of vitality for my colleagues to bring us closer to audiences.

Is it true you met with director Phuoc Sang (a famous film producer and show organiser in HCM City) to negotiate the opening of a northern-style theatre in HCM City?

I went to Saigon recently and I had plans to move to the south but then I changed my mind because of some personal reasons. Moreover, behind me is a group of artists (Chi Trung is the head of a drama troupe of the Youth Theatre, Hanoi). So I will try to explore the old land (Hanoi), which is considered to be sluggish.

What do you plan to do on that old land?

I have reached an agreement with the Hanoi Youth Union’s theatre to open a new stage for students in Hanoi. The new stage will open in around one month and my troupe will work there.

Why are you bringing your troupe to a new theatre?

There are four troupes in the Youth Theatre, like four operators of the same store. The four troupes share only one theatre and it means that each troupe has only three months of operation a year. So I decided to bring our troupe out though I know that we will face many challenges.

Besides comedies, we are confident with classical plays and dramas, with famous artists like Le Khanh, Hoa Thuy, Tu Oanh, Nguyet Hang, Quoc Tuan, Ba Anh and Si Tien.

Will this be a risk for your troupe?

We accept working without profit for the first two years. The most important thing is to produce products that fit the public’s taste.

We will try to make everything perfect for the audience, from the parking lot to other services. Young audiences are our target. We have chosen the Hanoi Youth Union theatre to serve that target audience. I hope to have permanent shows for students.

We have agreed to sell tickets at the lowest prices to have more viewers. In a time of recession, not many people can pay 80,000 for a ticket to a play, plus pay for other services.

Where will you start?

I want to start with short dramas to create a fire in young audiences. I hope to blow a new wind through stages in the north and the new theatre will open its doors all the time. My wish is also the dream of many other artists.
