A unique, ancient brick structure has been discovered at the National Go Thap Relic Area in Thap Muoi District in the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap.

The relic area management board said Sunday that scientists had found the 300 square meter creation at Minh Su Hill in Village 1, Tan Kieu Commune after 19 days of excavation.

According to archeologist Dao Linh Con, the brick structure, which is situated some 500 meters east of the relic area’s 10-floor tower, was created at a time between the first and ninth centuries BC.

Built like a pyramid with a height of 2 meters, the relic is composed of bricks measuring 20cm x 30cm x 5cm and supported by wooden posts.

Scientists are continuing to excavate the site in hopes of finding more objects which would allow them to identify the origin of the ancient structure.

In related news, an underground network of almost 100 meters in length has been discovered, including a kitchen, by locals in Dong Xuan District of the central coastal province of Phu Yen. Retired official and veteran Tran Ngoc Que said the tunnel was dug from 1965-66 for Ngo Quyen Regiment’s Battalion 13 to take shelter during the Vietnam War.
