A scene in ’Mua Len Trau’. Writer Son Nam’s short story Mua Len Trau was adapted into a film by Vietnamese-American director Nguyen Vo Nghiem Minh.

Nam was among a few prominent Vietnamese writers specialising in the tradition, history, geography, lifestyle and characteristics of the people of southern Viet Nam.

The works that will be republished are Lich Su Khan Hoang Mien Nam (History of Land Reclamation in the South), Dinh Mieu Va Le Hoi Dan Gian Mien Nam (Temples and Traditional Festivals in Southern Viet Nam) and Huong Rung Ca Mau (Fragrance of Ca Mau Forest).

Two thousand copies of each title will be printed and released tomorrow, August 13, exactly a year after his death at age 82 in HCM City.

In 2003, Nam became the first Vietnamese author living in Viet Nam to sign over the copyright to all his works, both published and unpublished, to the Tre Publishing House.

Many of his books and essays were published in southern Viet Nam before 1975.

Some of his books were republished in 1998 on the occasion of HCM City’s 300th anniversary and were warmly received by readers.

His short story Mua Len Trau (The Buffalo Boy) was adapted into a film by Vietnamese-American director Nguyen Vo Nghiem Minh. The film won several international awards including the New Director’s Prize at the Chicago Film Festival and the Grand Prix at the 2004 Amien Film Festival in France.
