Hot on the heels of shows in Tokyo and Osaka, genre-smashing sensation Girl Talk is set to hit Vietnam for a one-night performance in Hanoi on August 15.

An underground favorite for many years, Girl Talk (aka Gregg Gillis) caught the attention of a wider audience with his groundbreaking Night Ripper album in 2006. Since then he has become a festival sensation around the world, renowned as much for his wild live performances of his trademark hyper-sampled sound.

Gillis rose to even greater heights with the release of his fourth full-length effort, 2008’s Feed the Animals (available as a pay-what-you-want download from www.illegalart.net). The album made the best-of lists of everyone from Pitchfork to Time

Magazine, winning Girl Talk recognition as one of the most creative productions working Sunday, with FastCompany.com hailing Gillis as the world’s “first truly postmodern rockstar.”

At the core of Girl Talk’s signature “plunderphonic” sound is his uncanny ability to select and recontextualize samples from across the spectrum of popular music, from Nine Inch Nails to Kelly Clarkson to David Bowie to 2 Live Crew, simultaneously taking viscerally familiar elements and twisting them into something entirely new.

Feed the Animals alone crams more than 300 samples into its 50 minutes of madness, accelerating the world of the mash-up to a whole new realm of creativity.

Perhaps the ultimate comment on Gillis’ paradigm-shifting talents is the silence his work has solicited from the ever-litigious record industry, with the post-copyright posterboy managing to take the notion of Fair Use to brave new party-starting heights.

Girl Talk is the latest in a line-up of more than 35 acts to be brought to Vietnam by the Hanoi-based Club for Arts and Music Appreciation (C.A.M.A.) collective, one of Hanoi’s leading independent music promoters and co-founders of the celebrated Hanoi International Music Festival.

Girl Talk will hit the capital for his only Vietnam show at Gio Song Hong on Saturday evening August 15, supported by Hanoi’s own noise master Vu Nhat Tan and HCMC party-starter DJ Jase – (visit http://www.camavietnam.org for map and full details).
