World famous soft rock duo Air Supply will perform in Ho Chi Minh City on October 9-10

A decade after soft rock duo Air Supply moved Hanoi with their classic love songs, the chart-topping group will make its much-anticipated second appearance in Vietnam next month.

British guitarist Graham Russell and Australian Russell Hitchcock aim to charm Ho Chi Minh City fans at gigs on October 9 and 10 with their memorable hits of the late 70s, 80s and early 90s.

Three of their most popular songs in Vietnam, “Goodbye,” “All out of Love” and “Making Love out of Nothing at All,” will be on the set list, the group told Thanh Nien via email.

The duo said they were surprised and thrilled to have so many followers in Vietnam and that they were “eager to meet our fans as soon as possible.”

Russell and Hitchcock first met in 1975 in a rehearsal for the rock opera “Jesus Christ Superstar” in Australia. They formed the group in the same year.

After some mediocre successes, the duo’s breakthrough came in 1980 with the multi-platinum third album “Lost in Love.” The album helped Air Supply break into the US market with three top five singles – “Lost in Love,” “Every Woman in the World” and “All out of Love.”

“All out of Love” became a huge hit throughout the world and sparked many covers in both Asia and Europe.

The duo’s subsequent albums like “The One That You Love” (1981), “Now & Forever” (1982), and “The Greatest Hits” (1983), sold over 20 million copies around the world.

The group earned an even bigger fan base with the hit “Goodbye” on the 1993 album “The Vanishing Race.” The song’s lyrics, written by Elvis Presley’s ex-girlfriend Linda Thompson, were about a father-son relationship, a clear departure from the group’s romantic themes.

The song highlighted the group’s trademark sound with Hitchcock’s soaring tenor voice and Russell’s soft and simple acoustic guitar and singing style. “Goodbye” reached multi-platinum status.

The sounds of “Goodbye” and “All out of Love” are frequently sung by both young and old in karaoke venues throughout Vietnam.

Air Supply were among the first Western artists to tour Vietnam in the 90s along with Lobo, Leo Sayer and Bryan Adams.

After the peak of success in early 90s, the duo continued to tour the world and released live and compilation albums. They played in front of a crowd of 175,000 people in Cuba in 2005.

According to their official website, www.airsupplymusic.com, the group will release a new studio album next year, more than a decade after their last, “The Book of Love,” was released in 1997.

The Vietnam shows at Hoa Binh Theater, 14 Ba Thang Hai Street in District 10, come as part of an Asian tour that has already taken the group to the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia.

Tickets for the shows are available for VND2 million-1.2 million-1 million-400,000 (US$113-68-56.50-22.60) at Viettop Media, 47 Le Quy Don Street, District 3.
