High school writing contest; Free admission for cheo fans; Hair fashions on display; Students stage environmental play

Tenth- and eleventh-graders throughout HCM City have submitted environment-related essays for an English writing contest that is jointly organised by the Australian Consulate General and the Department of Education and Training.

The purpose of the contest is to enhance environmental awareness among Vietnamese youth and to endorse the Clean up the World Day, which takes place next Saturday.

Winners will be announced next Tuesday. They will be awarded book vouchers and be invited to participate in Clean up the World Day activities with the Australian Consul General and the Consulate’s Goodwill Ambassador actress Tang Thanh Ha.

Free admission for cheo fans

The Viet Nam Cheo Theatre offers cheo fans free entrance tickets of the classic play Luu Binh Duong Le directed by the People’s Artist Chu Van Thuc at No 1 Giang Van Minh street, Ha Noi tonight, September 11.

The play praises the friendship between Duong Le and Luu Binh who grow up together but have different destinies. Duong Le becomes a mandarin whereas, Luu Binh fails because of the laziness. To help Binh recover, Le asks his wife, Chau Long, to come and encourage Binh to study. Binh is unaware of Le’s action.

In the end, Binh sucessfully passes the court exam and feels very moved when rediscovers that truth.

Hair fashions on display

A display of the latest in hair styling will be held here tomorrow, September 12 by Davines, an Italian hair product company.

Titled Tinh Thuc (Awaken), it is expected to attract several leading international stylists.

The show will highlight the latest in unisex styles from Italy, Japan, South Korea and Viet Nam.

According to Davines’ Vietnamese representative, Nguyen Anh Tu, stylists from two other brand names, Japan’s Number Three company and South Korea’s Create, will also be featured.

The show will use 60 male and female models.

Students stage environmental play

Someday, a three-minute film on environmental protection made by students of Le Quy Don Secondary School, has won the top prize in the HCM City leg of a national competition organised for Vietnamese students by the Japanese embassy in the country.

Hello Viet Nam

by Trung Vuong High School and Phut Choc (In a Minute) by Le Quy Don Secondary School won the second and third prizes, respectively.

Most of the 12 films entering the final spoke about the need for protecting the environment and the earth.

The jury also chose 10 prominent films for the national final to be held in Ha Noi next month.

The national winners will win trips to Japan in December to take part in cultural activities.

VN teen wins Czech literary prize

Vietnamese-Czech teenager Lenka Pham has won the 14th Literature Award of a book club dedicated to promoting unpublished works, according to the Czech news agency CTK.

Pham, 19, whose Vietnamese name is Pham Thi Lan, received the prize for her story White Horse, Yellow Dragon on the lives of the Vietnamese community in the Czech Republic and the discrimination they face.

The daughter of a Vietnamese couple that has settled in the Czech Republic, Pham is the third woman to win this prize as well as the first non-Czech citizen, first Vietnamese and youngest writer to receive the honour.

The prize includes a cash award of 50,000 Czech koruny (nearly US$3,000).

Ship museum planned in Hoi An

Plans for a trading ships museum in the ancient town of Hoi An in the central province of Quang Nam have been made in co-ordination with the province’s Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Hoi An town.

People will have the chance to see ships and other seafaring memorabilia which used to be a part of the atmosphere at the Faifoo trading port, giving them a vision of the exciting activities at this popular 17th and 18th century port.

When finished, the 24,400sq.m museum is expected to contribute to the introduction of Vietnamese culture and history in general and advertise Hoi An’s image in particular to visitors.
