Electronic books about Ha Noi planned for 1,000th anniversary; New LED screens display capital’s images and new regulations; Artist to show works in German exhibition

A project to compile and publish five electronic books on Ha Noi, to celebrate the capital’s 1,000th anniversary, has begun.

Three books will be completed this year, including Ca Khuc Ha Noi The Ky 20 (Songs about Ha Noi in the 20th century), Bien Nien Lich Su Thang Long-Ha Noi (Annals of Thang Long-Ha Noi) and Thu Do Ha Noi (Ha Noi Capital).

The other two books, Atlas Thang Long-Ha Noi (Thang Long-Ha Noi’s Atlas) and Tong Thu Muc De Yeu Thang Long-Ha Noi (General Bibliography of Thang Long-Ha Noi), are expected to be completed by March next year.

New LED screens display capital’s images and new regulations

A trial to advertise Ha Noi images on LED (Light Emitting Diode) screens has begun in the capital.

The pictures, on screens in Thanh Nien Road and near Thuyen Quang Lake, show daily activities, traditional customs and historical sites such as Co Loa Citadel, Tran Quoc Pagoda, Long Bien Bridge, Hoan Kiem Lake, West Lake and Literature Temple, among others.

New policies and regulations are also displayed on the screens.

Artist to show works in German exhibition

Vietnamese culture will go on display in Nurnberg, Germany, in an exhibition of paintings entitled Nurnberg Impression and Vietnamese Villages by expatriate painter Pham Thi Doan Thanh.

The exhibition, to be held at the city’s hall on November 3, features nearly 40 pictures painted on silk and carved on wood.

Paintings under critical eyes of US fine arts colleges

Vietnamese artist Hoang Dang has been invited to display 30 of his oil and acrylic paintings at St Benedict and St John fine arts colleges in the US.

“Even though I have many pictures exhibited abroad, the trip to America still makes me anxious because this is the first time they are to be shown to American fine arts students and lecturers,” Dang said.

The exhibition, containing impressions of the nation’s landscape and people, will kick off on Sunday in Ha Noi.

Project to bring books to farmers reaps wide support and success

A project aimed at giving farmers access to libraries of free books is receiving wide support.

The Tu Sach Dong Ho (Family Book Library) project was the inspiration of college graduate Nguyen Quang Thach.

More than 5,000 books and 400 magazines have been donated, along with VND413 million (US$23,000), by people and organisations throughout the country. Book libraries have been set up in many provinces with the latest planned for northern Hai Duong province’s Cam Giang district at a cost of VND30 million ($1,500).

VTC plans gala awards ceremony for kids’ game show contestants

The Viet Nam Television Technology Investment and Development Company, or VTC, will give away prizes to the winners of its educational game show for children, Than Dong Dat Viet (Vietnamese Talents), at a gala to be shown live on its VTC1 channel this Sunday.

Cao Nam Hai of Ha Noi’s Doan Thi Diem Primary School bagged the first prize while Dao Minh Long of Ha Noi’s Thang Long School and Nguyen Nam Anh of Doan Thi Diem won the second and the third prizes.

The programme provided an opportunity for primary-school students to improve their knowledge of math, history, social and natural sciences, and other subjects.
