Unlimited is among the 23 23 top rock acts that will perform at a concert in HCMC Sunday

More than 20 Vietnamese rock bands will perform at an eight-hour concert Sunday in Ho Chi Minh City, with organizers touting the event as the largest rock show to ever hit the country.

The “Rock on Wave” concert, which has already been dubbed by the press as a “Vietnamese Woodstock,” will feature 23 top rock acts from around the country, including Unlimited, Atmosphere, SagoMetal and God Father.

The show will open at 3:30 p.m. and last until midnight. Organizers said they would do their best to keep the concert-goers there until the end.

“The bands will be lined up in a way that makes sure each of them has their own shining moment,” said Nguyen Cuu Long, head of Saigon Rock Club, the concert’s organizer. Long said the best sound system available in the country would be used for the concert.

Vy Nhat Tao, director of Ho Chi Minh City Pop Music Center, which manages Saigon Rock Club, said “Rock on Wave” was the third rock show organized by the club and “will be a feast for local rock fans”.

The number of rock fans is growing fast in Vietnam, Tao said, noting that more than 12,000 people came to the previous Saigon Rock Night II in 2008, up from around 4,000 for the first show in 2006.

The “Rock on Wave” concert will be held at Tao Dan Sports Club, 1 Huyen Tran Cong Chua Street, District 1. Free tickets can be obtained at Saigon Rock Club at 185 Hai Ba Trung Street, District 3, HCMC.
