A German berger beat more than 150 other contestants to win Vietnam’s first-ever dog show held in Ho Chi Minh City over the last weekend.

A Phu Quoc ridgeback was named the runner-up at the awarding ceremony on Sunday. It also won the category specific for rare canine species native to Vietnam.

The competition would pave the way for Vietnam to join the world canine organization Federation Cynologique Internationale (FCI), said FCI chairman Takemi Nagamura.

It would also be a chance for other countries to know more about the Phu Quoc ridgeback, he added.

The two-day event was organized by the Vietnam Kennel Association (VKA) with referee Monnique Van Brempt from FCI as the chief jurywoman and chairman Takemi as the supervisor.

VKA has recently applied for joining the FCI, which is a requisite for domestic dog breeds, including the Phu Quoc ridgeback, to attend international dog shows regulated by FCI.
