Thanh Nien finds out that some celebrity offspring live just like normal kids.

How celebrities raise their kids is something that intrigues everyone. “Are they different from us?” is clearly a question that springs in everyone’s mind. In many countries, paparazzi camp outside the homes of celebs to get photographs and follow their kids to toy stores, parks, and other places.

Thankfully, that phenomenon has yet to make an appearance in Vietnam, though people in the country are undoubtedly curious about celebrities’ kids.

Singer Hien Thuc and her daughter Gia Bao. Like other mothers, Thuc is both flexible and strict with her eight-year-old child.

In many Asian societies, bearing and raising children is a given for both men and women, considering it ensures the all-important family line continues. But in the case of celebs, they do not have much time to spend with their kids.

How do Vietnamese celebrities manage? Singer and single mother Hien Thuc, 28, is both flexible and strict with her eight-year-old daughter Gia Bao. While she gets up early to drop Bao off at school and picks her up, takes her out for fun and games, Thuc also lets the girl know that she will be loved but not pampered.

For 30-something artist couple Phuoc Sang and Kim Thu, spending time with their kids is very important.

“Dollar and Euro were brought up by their grandparents and nannies. So, being the children of artists did not prevent them from indulging in normal activities. Sang now wants to send our sons to kindergarten,” Thu says.

Hard and fast

Noted musical couple Cam Van and Khac Trieu are strict with their 14- and 11-year-old daughters Trieu Man and Van Khanh - no spending money, using mobile phones, or surfing the net without permission.

“Sometimes we feel sorry about being so rigid, but when they understand us there is nothing to worry about,” Van says.

Waiting until 18

Stage actress and theater owner Hong Van, 41, is completely different from other moms, allowing her 15-year-old daughter Xi Ngau to learn all about love and sex. This modern mother says concealing this issue from kids is a double-edged sword.

Cam Van (2rd, L) and Khac Trieu’s happy family. They bring their daughters up with strict rules.

“Women are born to control and enjoy sex. That is the point I want my daughter to understand. Full knowledge about it will prevent her from becoming curious about sex. I show her the way to approach it.”

“If you are in love with a man, you must keep him out of jail for having sex with teenagers. Wait until you are 18, girl,” is her lighthearted but judicious advice to her daughter.

But Van does not let her daughter stay out overnight and says she does not, in fact, sleep until her three kids are tucked away in bed.
