Da Lat to be feted as wellspring of Vietnamese artistic talent; Union of Literature and Arts awards prizes to 52 works; Festival day helps 15,000 students learn life skills

Siren: Singer Bonner Trinh to express her gratitude to Da Lat.

Artist natives of Da Lat will gather together for a first of its kind tribute to their native place on Sunday at the Dong Dao club in District 3, HCM City.

The Lanh (Cool) performance is for the artists to “show their gratitude towards the place that gave birth to them and nurtured their dreams of becoming artists”, said stage director Quanky.

Also themed “Sunday with Da Lat City and stories of people who come from the mountainous area”, the show is also a chance for the artists to meet each other and exchange memories of Da Lat, known nationwide as the City of Flowers.

“We have wanted to hold a show of Da Lat artists for so long. We want, firstly ourselves, then others, to witness the work of the artists and their efforts to achieve recognition, and highlight the significant creativity of the people of Da Lat,” said Quanky.

The show will bring together more than 20 Da Lat artists and singers including national stars like Bonner Trinh, Nguyen Thao, Xuan Phu, Dinh Nguyen, Viet Thanh, and Bao Chau.

Union of Literature and Arts awards prizes to 52 works

The Viet Nam Union of Literature and Arts Associations has awarded prizes for 52 works of art by artists from 29 associations across the country.

Entries sent to the organising board this year were a lively and truthful representation of Vietnamese life but failed to reflect the profound uniqueness that the board was looking for in order to grant the top prize.

The competition attracted hundreds of artists from 41 associations who submitted a total of 345 pieces between them.

The B prizes, worth VND7 million (about US$360) each, were awarded to eight artists that used a variety of styles.

The union also granted 12 C prizes, 11 consolation prizes, 13 prizes to lifetime achievers and eight to emerging talents.

Regretfully, in the last two years, the organising board hasn’t received any work in the field of architecture and this year, 22 cities and provinces didn’t take part.

The prizes are granted annually to artists in the fields of literature and arts with the aim of paying tribute to artistic excellence and encouraging new talent.

Festival day helps 15,000 students learn life skills

Nearly 15,000 students from high schools in HCM City and seven neighbouring provinces will attend the second Lighting the Dream for Vietnamese Young People Day celebration.

The festival day will be held on Sunday at HCM City’s Cultural Youth House in District 1, organised by the city’s youth union in co-operation with the Department of Education and Training and sponsor, Cool Air Chewing Gum.

Le Quoc Phong, secretary of the youth union, said they would take part in contests, team games and talk with experts and company representatives.

Dr Ho Thieu Hung, the former head of the education department, said that most high school students in HCM City lacked life skills, discipline and patience.

Last year the festival day attracted more than 10,000 students from high schools in HCM City and neighbouring provinces.
