Laos receives diary translation; Hoi An holds carnival for New Year; Photo association elects new leader; Sony celebrates Ha Noi’s beauty; Environment channel hits air waves

Yesterday, 1,000 copies of the diary were handed over to the Laos’s Ministry of Information and Culture and the Committee of Youth and Children.

Also yesterday, December 28, a competition was launched to celebrate the revolutionary histories of Laos and Viet Nam. The winner will be invited to Duc Pho District in the central province of Quang Ngai where Tram worked as a liberation army doctor, and where she was killed by American troops.

Her diary has already been translated into a number of former languages and was adapted into the film Dung Dot (Don’t Burn).

Hoi An holds carnival for New Year

Hoi An plans to welcome in the new year with a street carnival on Thursday.

Vo Phung, the director of the Hoi An Centre for Culture, Sports and Tourism, said the celebrations would have a Western feel to make foreign visitors feel more at home.

“The event will also celebrate Hoi An’s culture,” Phung added.

Photo association elects new leader

Vu Quoc Khanh, Vietnam News Agency Publishing House’s director, has been voted as Viet Nam Artistic Photographers Association (VAPA)’s new president at its congress recently held in Ha Noi.

VAPA holds a congress every five years to elect new leaders. This year, apart from Khanh, Le Xuan Thang from the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta region, and Pham Van Ty of the central region and Central Highlands were elected vice president.

In the new term, the executive committee will strengthen solidarity between members and will be active in international photographic activities. As predicted, VAPA will be the host of the 30th International Federation of Photographic Art (FIAP) Congress next August, Khanh said.

Sony celebrates Ha Noi’s beauty

Sony Electronics Viet Nam plans to air a 45-second film entitled Vietnamese Beauty until the end of January to celebrate capital Ha Noi’s 1,000th anniversary.

While the first episode of the film released last year celebrated Viet Nam’s hidden charms, the sequel will revel in the capital’s colourful history.

Part of the film will be set to ca tru (ceremonial singing).

Environment channel hits air waves

VTC 14, the first television channel in Viet Nam to specialise on the environment and natural disasters will be launched officially by the Viet Nam Multimedia Corporation (VTC) on January 1.

The new channel will be broadcast 24/7, providing news, films, documentaries and reality shows that raise awareness of potential threats, as well as forecasts of imminent disasters, to improve the preparedness of relevant agencies and people.

Musical to honour former king

A two-hour performance of cai luong (reformed theatre) written by Most Venerable Thich Thanh Tu and choreographed by Bach Tuyet will be staged across the country in the run up to the Lunar New Year this February.

The performance will celebrate the life and career of King Tran Nhan Tong, who came to the throne in 1279 at the age of 21 and twice led his army to victory against Mongol invaders.

In peace time, the king joined a monastery and founded the Truc Lam (Bamboo Forest) School of Zen.
