LookAtVietnam – An exhibition on 20th century Irish writer and dramatist Samuel Beckett has opened in HCM City.

Samuel Beckett is being organised by the Irish Embassy in Ha Noi and the HCM City University of Social Sciences and Humanities to introduce the influential writer to Vietnamese through photos taken by John Minihan and documents.

The opening ceremony on Tuesday was marked by a brief performance of an excerpt from one of Beckett’s works. Play, by expatriates at the Ha Noi International Theatre.

Written in 1963, the one-act play tells the story of a love triangle, with each character narrating its bitter history and role.

A documentary film titled The Man Who Shot Beckett on the meeting between of Minihan and Beckett was also shown.

The exhibition was earlier on show in Ha Noi and Da Nang in September and November.

Born in Dublin in 1906, Beckett moved to Paris in 1938 and lived there until his death in 1989. His most famous works include the dramas Waiting for Godot, Endgame, and All that Fall and the novels Molloy, Malone Dies and The Unnameable. In 1969, he was granted the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Minihan was born in Dublin in 1946 and became a photo journalist at 21. He met and made friends with Irish writers like Beckett and William Burroughs.

He will deliver a talk about Irish writers to students at the university.

The exhibition will remain open to the public at the HCM City University of Social Sciences and Humanities, 10-12 Dinh Tien Hoang Street, District 1, until December 11.
