LookAtVietnam – The Hanoi Dancers’ Association has launched a dance choreography competition, which aims to seek a new dance for the people.

In the launching ceremony, the organising board introduced some Vietnamese dances but the way dancers performed them like sport dances.

People throughout the world have their own unique dances. That includes the ethnic minority groups in Vietnam including a dance of ethnic people in the Central Highlands and the mua khen of H’Mong people.

Today, Vietnamese youngsters are more likely to show off hip-hop moves in the street while foreign dances like salsa are growing in popularity.

Competition organizers still believe, however, that Vietnamese people lack a popular dance for all and this competition aim to solve the problem.

However, experts already warm that competition will not work because a dance needs time to become a popular, not just a competition.

Some 20 years ago, the Ministry of Culture launched a competition to create Vietnamese dances. Nine dances were awarded but they have disappeared.

“It is not too difficult to choreograph a dance but it is hard to maintain and develop it,” said People’s Artist Ung Duy Thinh.
