More than 40 Vietnamese woodblock paintings, a tradition pursued by a handful of artists in Vietnam, are being displayed in Paris for the first time.

The solo exhibition that opened last Friday (December 4) features the work of young artist Hoang Minh Phuc.

The black and white paintings on do, a traditional, handmade paper, reflect her personal feelings and perspectives on the people of Vietnam.

Phuc is among very few artists in the country still pursuing the painstaking art of woodblock paintings, featured most in the Dong Ho paintings of Bac Ninh Province in the north.

The exhibition will remain open for a month until January 4 at the Vietnam Culture Center in Paris and is expected to be shown in Germany later.

Phuc, currently a student and researcher in France, is a lecturer at the Hanoi University of Industrial Fine Arts. She has received several awards in graphic paintings, including the 2001 “Golden Hand” award given to young artists.
