The sculpting of the world’s largest jade Gautama Buddha statue weighing 16 tons began in the northern province of Hai Duong on Monday.

The statue, made from a 35-ton jade stone bought at a jewelry exhibition in Myanmar, is expected to be three meters high and two meters wide when completed next year, according to the Than Chau Ngoc Viet (Vietnam’s Gemstone and Jewelry) Company.

This would be the world’s largest jade Buddha statue, the company said, adding that it would be placed on a lotus base weighing nine tons.

The world’s currently largest statue, called ““The Jade Buddha for Universal Peace,” measures 2.9 meters tall and weighs 3.9 tons. It was put on display in Vietnam last March at the beginning of a world tour before being enshrined in Australia.
