Vietnamese Song Award 2009 goes to northern songwriter

Nguyen Xinh Xo, 32, won the Vietnamese Song Award 2009 at a ceremony in Hanoi on January 24 for his song “Dong Ho Treo Tuong” or “Clock”.

Singer Tung Duong received the award for Nguyen Xinh Xo.

Studying business administration in the US, Nguyen Xinh Xo has been known as a talented songwriter since his cooperation with diva Ha Tran several years ago on her album “Dialogue 06”. He was born in a family of musicians. His father is the former head of the Vietnam Music Institute and deputy director of the Hanoi Conservatory of Music, while his mother is a former violin lecturer at the Hanoi Conservatory of Music. Xo is considered as a phenomenon in the music circle.

The songwriter is not in Vietnam, so singer Tung Duong, who successfully performed his “Clock”, received the award for Xo.

Singer and songwriter Luu Thien Huong won “Outstanding Song for Contemporary Folk Style” for her song “Guoc Moc” or “Wooden Shoes”. This is the third time Huong has won an award at the Vietnamese Song competition.

Son Thach received “Outstanding Song for Chamber Music Lifestyle” for “Bang Khuang” (Melancholy). This is the second time Thach has been honored at this competition. In 2007 he won an award for “Sail Drift Away”.

Thanh Tam also returned with two awards, “Outstanding Music Mixer” and “Outstanding Song for Modern Pop Style” for “Mot Ngay Moi” (A New Day). His song “Flowers at the Veranda” was voted as “Most Favourite Song” in 2006.

Tina Tinh is also a familiar face at the Vietnamese Song competition. She won “Outstanding Song for Modern Rock Style” award for “Give Back to Me”.

The “Most Favourite Song” award went to Huy Truc’s “Mother’s Rice Bowl”. Dam Manh Ninh won “Most Favourite Singer.” The biggest surprise was blind songwriter, Thanh Binh, who won two awards: “Promising Songwriter” and “Impressive Songwriter” for “Dream”.

Vietnamese Song is an annual song-writing contest held by the national Vietnam Television (VTV). This is the most prestigious song-writing contest in Vietnam.
