The local blockbuster, directed by Le Thanh Son, will be the first Vietnamese film to screen at the annual film festival in lower Manhattan, held from April 21 to May 2.

The martial-arts film has received near-unanimous praise from local critics since its Christmas season premier two months ago. Starring Vietnamese American stuntman-turned-actor Johnny Tri Nguyen and former model Ngo Thanh Van, the film’s plot revolves around a criminal gang assigned to carry out a number of major robberies.

It was also a resounding commercial success, raking in nearly VND20 billion (US$1.08 million) in ticket sales so far, twice as much as the revenue of any of last year’s local box office hits, according to the film’s producers.

One of New York’s most prestigious film events, the Tribeca Film Festival was founded by world-acclaimed actor Robert De Niro in 2002 in a bid to revitalize lower Manhattan in the wake of the September 11 disaster.

Filmmakers such as Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro, Craig Hatkoff, Jeffrey Wright, and Selena Altschule make up the festival’s board.
