About half of the 400 Vietnamese travelers believed to have been stranded in Bangkok when antigovernment protesters took control of the city’s two main airports last week have returned home safely.

About 160 people were aboard the first Vietnam Airlines aid flight from Thailand’s Utapao Airport that landed in Hanoi Sunday morning. Other Vietnamese returned home on Vietnam Airlines flights through Laos and Cambodia.

Vietnam Airlines has asked Thai authorities to operate one more flight to Utapao, near Bangkok, to retrieve the remaining Vietnamese travelers struck in Thailand, an airline representative said Sunday.

If approved, Vietnam Airlines’ second retrieval flight will operate tomorrow morning.

Vietnam Airlines has canceled its flights between Bangkok and Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
