Despite the lack of a signboard, exotic beverages, and even a name, the little café inside Can Tho City’s Luu Huu Phuoc Park on Hoa Binh Avenue, is still one of the most popular places in town.

Bird aficionados in Can Tho City and neighboring Mekong Delta areas such as Long Xuyen, Chau Doc and Kien Giang have dubbed the café the “kingdom” of birds. Long poles fixed horizontally overhead serve as hanging areas where customers can place their cages and the sound of dozens of twittering creatures creates a lively, animated atmosphere.

The café opened more than 10 years ago when the Can Tho Ornamental Bird Club was established. It now attracts tens of bird enthusiasts every day. The café also attracts bird collectors from other localities on days when a strange or rare bird is brought to the coffee shop.

The café also serves as a venue for collectors to buy and trade ornamental birds.

Taking a seat in the café, it’s easy to see the local people’s passion for their feathered friends. Customers discuss all aspects of bird-rearing and tell anecdotes about peculiar birds they’ve seen. Some locals are even famous now for their rare birds and breeding techniques.
