VietNamNet BridgeAbout 120 kilometers south of Dalat is Bao Loc, a big town in Lam Dong Province known as B’Lao and an established home of tea since the 1930s.

Visitors enjoy B’Lao tea at the Tea Culture Festival in Bao Loc Town last week.

Cau Dat, at 1,600 meters above sea level, in Truong Tho Hamlet, Xuan Truong Commune, 30 kilometers from the city’s center of Dalat, was where the French first brought fragrant tea trees. They then expanded the tea growing region and until 1950s, around 400 tea plantations were built in B’lao.

The French were wise in choosing this new land as the soil and environment here proved suitable for tea trees and locals started to process this agricultural product with their own brands that are famous today. The land is now home to many famous tea brands including, Tram Anh, Tam Chau, Rong Vang, and Ngoc Trang.

To keep the unique taste and quality of B’Lao tea, local tea makers carefully taste tea samples. Vu Xuan Vinh, owner of Quoc Thai Tea Brand, who has had a strong attachment to the tea industry for 40 years, said: “Each kind of B’Lao Tea has its own taste and is made with a specific secret. Quoc Thai Tea is as sweet-smelling as jasmine, while Do Huu and Kim Anh are as sweet-smelling as cholorantus (hoa soi). Though produced in different ways, B’lao tea has the same characteristics, sweet and fragrant.”

In order to introduce the unique Vietnamese tea culture to the world, Lam Dong Province plans to combine tea culture with tourism development: Tam Chau Company opened a factory in the Dambri Falls area where visitors can see the process of producing B’Lao tea, enjoy the tea-making art and bring home some tea.
