VietNamNet Bridge - The number of foreign arrivals visiting Hanoi this year has been estimated at 1.3 million, or nine percent lower than the yearly target, according to the Hanoi tourist administration.

Cao Thi Ngoc Lan, Deputy Director of the municipal Service of Culture, Sports and Tourism, largely blamed the situation on the global economic downturn.

Rising inflation in Vietnam has increased the costs of services by 30 - 40 percent during 2008, lowering the attractiveness of the country to foreign tourists, she said.

China , which supplies up to one-third of the capital’s foreign tourists, restricted its citizens from using border crossings to visit Vietnam while the Olympic Games were taking place in Beijing , while Thailand , the main transit gateway into Vietnam , has suffered recent widespread political unrest. All of these factors have had an impact on Vietnam ’s tourist industry.

The municipal tourist industry has also been criticised for its limited competitiveness, with critics claiming the city has a poor range of tourism products and poor quality of services, evidenced by a lack of luxury hotels.

Despite China ’s restrictions, the northern neighbour is still Hanoi ’s largest tourist market, followed by France , Australia , the Republic of Korea and the US .

The European market exhibited steady growth, constituting 31 percent of the total number of foreign tourists visiting Hanoi . Meanwhile, the number of tourists from the U.S. fell by 8 percent and this trend is predicted to continue until the end of 2009.
