Northern provinces will be cold and possibly wet just before the Tet Lunar New Year holiday, said a national weather official.

But he said the first days of the Lunar New Year would be warmer.

Vu Anh Tuan, head of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting’s Short-Term Forecast Department, said the average daytime temperature in the northern region’s plain areas will drop to as low as 14 degrees Celsius on January 24 and 25 while the temperature in mountainous areas will dip to 12-13 degrees Celsius.

But the northern region would be warmer from January 26 (Lunar New Year’s Day) on, he said.

Tuan said light rains would hit northeastern provinces on January 23 while central provinces from Thanh Hoa to Phu Yen will experience medium rains on January 24.

The Central Highlands will not be affected by the cold spell or the rains, with lows at 12-15 degrees Celsius and highs at 23-25 degrees over the New Year holiday.

In the south, lows of 18 to 21 degrees Celsius are to be expected January 25-27, with highs of 28-29 degrees, Tuan said.

According to the HCMC Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Control, high tides in the Saigon River over the next week could flood some streets in areas outside the city center such as District 12 and HocMon, Binh Chanh and Cu Chi districts.
