The authority that runs the Ho Chi Minh City airport terminal Friday banned two taxi firms from operating inside the airport for repeatedly breaching regulations.

The Tan Son Nhat Terminal Operation Company said Mai Linh Corporation’s Mai Linh taxis and Ngoi Sao Tuong Lai JSC’s Future taxis would not be allowed to enter the airport.

A company official said Mai Linh drivers had flouted rules on 38 occasions between February 3 and March 9, including parking illegally, soliciting passengers directly and driving on the wrong side.

Future drivers were caught on nine occasions.

The company has banned Mai Linh until April 7 and Future for an unspecified period.

Earlier this month the authority announced it would issue special entry cards next month for taxi drivers.

Last month the city Department of Transport’s inspectorate fined more than 300 taxi drivers for flouting airport rules following inspections.

Of them, 197 drivers were fined for not parking in designated areas, 30 for picking up and dropping off passengers at undesignated areas, 11 for not holding taxi-driving certificates, and five for not possessing driver’s licenses.

The crackdown followed a Thanh Nien report on gouging and queue jumping by the airport taxis.
