VietNamNet Bride – MOT decided that Jetstar Pacific Airlines needs a new logo to replace the “Jet” logo and orange star.

Prior to that, local newspapers reported Government agencies disagreed on whether Jetstar Pacific has the right to use the ‘Jet’ logo and orange star.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV) said Vietnam’s first budget airline could not use its familiar Jetstar logo.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Industry and Trade said it saw no problems with the brand. The National Office for Intellectual Property (NOIP) also recognised the logo and brand name of Jetstar Pacific Airlines.

Nevertheless, MOT, which is the management body of air carriers and the aviation market, still sticks to its opinion that Jetstar Pacific Airlines must have new branding to avoid confusion.

MOT has instructed Jetstar Pacific to build up a new logo which meets the requirements of Commercial Law, Competition Law, Aviation Law and Intellectual Property Law.

MOT Minister Ho Nghia Dung stressed at the meeting that the ministry has been creating the most favourable conditions for airlines to operate and develop.

Therefore, Jetstar Pacific will be able to keep its normal operation in accordance with the operation license which expires on October 15, 2010.

One year after first using the ‘Jetstar’ brand, the air carrier previously known as Pacific Airlines has surely escaped from its most difficult period. In July 2009, Jetstar Pacific Airlines, for the first time, announced profits and the plan to obtain 30 percent growth rate in the number of passengers this year.

Qantas, the owner of Australian Jetstar Airways, the franchiser in the Jetstar Pacific deal, did not send a representative to the meeting.

Now Jetstar Pacific is in the position of having to invest in a new brand name, or resort back to the Pacific Airlines title. A brand that was once considered weak.

Jetstar Pacific, which was previously named Pacific Airlines, was previously on the verge of bankruptcy. Since April 26, 2007, the air carrier has been put under the management of SCIC.

On April 26, 2007, SCIC decided to sell 30 percent of the airline’s stake, worth $50 million to Australian Qantas.

On May 23, 2008, Pacific Airlines changed its name and logo, from Pacific Airlines to Jetstar Pacific.
