The laughs, voices and the sound of the oars beating the water of two groups of young people race rafts across the lake and their fan break the silence on the lake.

This rowing contest is just one of the outdoor activities available to young people at Son Tinh Camp in Dong Mo area – about 40km east of Hanoi's centre.

Surrounded by Dong Mo Lake and a man-made acacia forest, the campsite is an ideal weekend getaway for Hanoians.

Hidden under the trees' shadows, the 55ha Son Tinh Camp is the first place in Ha Noi to offer outdoor recreational activities, which are very popular in developed countries but are still considered ‘new' by Vietnamese people.

Visitors can rent small two-person tents or family tents with great views over the lake, where they can stretch out while enjoying the bird songs. Opened to public in May last year, the campsite attracts a large number of visitors, especially the younger set. Visitors not brave enough to try the zipline will find fishing, biking or rowing to be available and more relaxing alternatives. Of course, the camp also has a fire pit, which can be the perfect ending to the day.
