Forty-four people of Vietnamese origin were detained by Czech authorities on Saturday after a taskforce of more than 1,000 people, including 500 policemen, inspected the Vietnamese Sapa Market in Prague.

The Vietnamese were detained for not having ID cards.

Prague Customs manager Radek Kurka said it was just a normal inspection, while the police said they were checking the origins and copyright of goods as well as residency status of the Vietnamese community.

The examination occurred two weeks after a fire broke out at the market, causing an estimated loss of US$10 million.

Police, customs officers and business inspectors also examined Holesovice Market in Prague on Saturday, where many people of Vietnamese origin trade.
