Overseas Vietnamese Le Van Hieu was Tuesday granted an honorary doctorate by the University of Adelaide for his contribution to society.

Hieu, 54, is also Lieutenant Governor of South Australia, the first-ever Vietnamese-born person appointed to a vice-regal position in the world, according the university’s media release.

He is also Chairman of the South Australian Multicultural and Ethnic Affairs Commission and a senior manager at the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).

In 1996, he was awarded an Australia Day Medal for making an outstanding contribution to ASIC and was awarded the Centenary of Federation Medal for the development of multiculturalism.

Hieu, who arrived in Australia in 1977, was awarded the honoris causa degree together with John Doyle AC, Chief Justice of the South Australia’s Supreme Court.
