Russia will open a new market to accommodate businesses displaced by the shutdown of Cherkizovsky Market in Moscow, home to many Vietnamese sellers, the Vietnam Businessmen’s Association in Russia said.

Vladimir Malyshkov, head of the consumer market and services department in Moscow, said the new market in the city suburbs that would become operational next month, is expected to take in most of 45,000 former traders from Cherkizovsky Market, the association said in a report on its website.

Moscow decided in June to temporarily close Cherkizovsky Market for at least three months amid accusations of sanitary violations, smuggling and the use of illegal immigrant labor.

Malyshkov said after the shutdown many people who formerly did business at Cherkizovsky market had to move to other markets, causing discontent among traders at those markets.

Vietnam in July said the Cherkizovsky closure was affecting the Vietnamese community and requested the Moscow administration and Russian agencies to solve the issue.
