A Vietnamese graduate student was stabbed to death in Taiwan Monday by a fellow citizen following an altercation between them.

Hoang Van Viet succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday, and Nguyen Thanh Trung, a Vietnamese worker in Taipei, surrendered to the local police and confessed his crime, local newswire Vnexpress reports.

Preliminary investigations reveal that Viet went with some friends to a restaurant behind the National Kaohsiung University of Applied Sciences where he was studying and they were joined there by more Vietnamese men including Trung, who stabbed Viet’s lung with a restaurant knife as they were about to leave.

The local Liberty Times cited the restaurant owner as saying the group spoke in both Chinese and Vietnamese, so he didn’t know exactly what they had been arguing about.

Meanwhile the China Times cited Trung as saying that Viet had rubbed his head and said that he was a loser.

Trung and Viet had known each other since they were in Vietnam. They had taken the same job on arrival in Taiwan, but Trung was not satisfied with it, so he quit.

Another Vietnamese who was also at the table said, “No one thought the matter would end that way. When I stood up to return to the dormitory, I heard Viet cry out. I turned and saw him lying in a lot of blood.”

Police are investigating the case further and a video camera at the restaurant will be used to gather evidence.
