Dozens of outstanding Vietnamese students studying abroad attended the New Year Festival for Overseas Vietnamese Students at the Temple of Literature in Hanoi on Tuesday night.

The students returning from the US, the UK, Australia, Singapore and other nations were back home on their Christmas and New Year holiday.

The festival was held by the Vietnamese Students’ Association and Vietnam Television in cooperation with local agencies and newspapers.

After paying tribute to their ancestors, the students shared their study abroad experiences with local high-schoolers aiming to go overseas for university.

Nguyen Thi Bich Diep, who studies at Stanford University, said most Vietnamese students were clever and hard-working but they still lacked communications skills and confidence compared with their international peers.

Most of the participating overseas students said they wanted return to Vietnam after their studies.

Diep said she wanted to work in the US for several years before returning to Vietnam.

The annual festival also included an education fair, musical performances and English, IT and climate change awareness competitions.
