Imported into Vietnam recently, impromptu dancing at public sites or “Flash Mob” has become a new trend of Hanoian youth. A flash mob is a large group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual or pointless act for a brief time, then disperse. The term “flash mob” is generally applied only to gatherings organized via telecommunications, social media, or viral emails. It is not applied to events organized by public relations firms, protests, and publicity stunts.

The first flash mob was created in Manhattan in May 2003, by Bill Wasik, senior editor of Harper’s Magazine. The origin of flash mobs were unknown until Wasik published an article about his creation in the magazine’s March 2006 edition.

In Hanoi, flash mobs are developing quickly, attracting many teens and children.
